Cell Phones Cause Accidents

Comments Off

How dangerous are drivers using cell-phones?  Employers are taking steps to limit use of cell-phones according to new studies.  In April 2008 the Insurance Information Institute published an excellent article on cell phones and driving.

It is hard to believe as of February 2008, in the United States alone, over 254 million people subscribed to wireless communication devices… (Cell phones) compared to a little over 4 million people in 1990.

The danger of talking on a cell phone while driving is two fold.  First, drivers lose their concentration on the highway, and second they take their eyes off the road when they are dialing or text messaging.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the National Center for Statistics and Analysis found that in 2006 that 5% of drivers talk on hand held cell phones while driving.  Other surveys found that 73% of drivers talk on cell phones while driving.

If you have been injured by a driver while they were talking on a cell phone in addition to actual damages, there is some authority you may also be entitled to punitive damages.
